Question: Was Metroid Prime 3 worth the wait?
Short Answer: YES
Set after the events of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Samus finds herself in the middle of more Space Pirate plots to take over the galaxy. This time the action takes place on the Wii and utilizes it’s motion sensitive controls that will have you taking down your enemies with an amount of precision rarely seen on a gaming console. You might even wonder how you ever managed to play a console first person shooter with a regular controller.
Other than the modernized control scheme, the first thing you’ll immediately notice is how good the game looks. Metroid Prime 3 is easily the best looking Wii game to date. For some people that may not mean much at first, but when you consider that the visuals could be mistaken for something delivered on one of the other more powerful next-gen consoles, it deserves recognition. Colorful special effects abound, as well as fantastic art design. There’s a sense that the game was lovingly crafted and detailed during it’s production.
Not as immediately apparent, but just as important, is how rich the audio is. A strong soundtrack appropriately weaves itself through the different environments as you play and is never out of place. It is rich and varied depending on the environment and does a fantastic job of adding to the atmosphere of the strange, alien worlds you’ll be visiting. You’ll feel the music surge as you engage in battle with your enemies, and become more ambient when you find yourself working on one of the puzzles the game throws at you. You’ll appreciate not being beat over the head by the soundtrack as some of these puzzles can be clever.
Speaking of puzzles, there isn’t as big an emphasis on them as in previous Metroid games. However, the more cerebral gamers out there shouldn’t worry. There are still plenty of puzzles to solve and the increase in shooting action doesn’t turn the game into a run and gun spray fest. This is especially true if you are going to try getting 100% of the items in the game. Rarely do you get them without some work. Just keep in mind you’ll find yourself doing a little more shooting than you did in the earlier Prime games. No biggie.
This is a no-brainer for fans of the franchise.
