Tray — You gotta love how game publishers find ways to half-ass drag classic games kicking and screaming into the modern age. This mess looks corny and stinks of some sort of “Devil May Yiff” mash up which undoubtedly blows ass. Thankfully this game, which was released in 2005 for the PS2 in Europe and Japan, had it’s US release canceled. That makes it easier for the rest of us to pretend that it doesn’t exist!
If I can’t mutate into an animal after touching a mysterious blue orb that appears after I punch a wolf in the face, I ain’t down with whatever this game is trying to sell. You can take your angsty over-stylized characters and the tired military experiment gone wrong angle and go Neff yourself. This one is so horrible that I’m just going to let Corbin try to go into further detail before I fire off into a series of unintelligible curses and grunts.
Corbin — I actually hope that they reconsider the release of this game in the U.S. We know it’s going to be awful but I’m just that pathetically curious. Now, a few good points about this trailer, I’m sorry I’m buzzed right now. There are no good points about this trailer. This is your very typical, by-the-book, lame modernization of an old classic and it’s very easy to do.
Put spiky hair on the hero, apply cargo pants, add some misunderstood internal struggle, include a hot chick for good measure, then throw in a military experiment gone wrong, and you’re set. Oh, and don’t forget the amnesia.
You know, I am going to pretend this doesn’t exist. Until the day they actually make an unbastardized version of Altered Beasts, I’ll just shove this experience in the darkest parts of my memory along with my memories of being gang raped by clowns.
Official info about this game from Wikipedia.
A PlayStation 2 title was released by Sega in 2005, known as Project Altered Beast in Japan and simply Altered Beast in Europe; the game was not released in North America. In Japan, it was rated 17+ for its intensity.
Rather than serving as a sequel to the original game, the newer title features a more modern setting that is unconnected to the original game. The story follows a man called Luke Custer who is a “Genome-Cyborg”, which in the game is a human that has had his DNA and other genetic make-up altered so that he can (after acquiring the chip containing the right genes for each creature) transform into a mythical beast. The main creatures he transforms into are a Werewolf, a Merman, a Garuda, a Wendigo, a Fire Minotaur, and a Thunder Dragon. Its storyline differs from the original Altered Beast games where during the game, you gain a serum that allows you to change at will. There are a number of difficult boss challenges and puzzles within the game, plus some extra characters to transform into including a White Weretiger, a Grizzly Bear, and the alien-cloned U.W.H. (Unidentified Weightless Human) for those who finish the game.
U.W.H? How neat.

What is this crap? Oh well, at least it didn’t come out here. What the hell is Sega doing with their franchises these days. Isn’t there a Golden Axe remake coming down the pipe someday?
Sega is so awkward
Yes on Golden Axe, here’s the only decent video I’ve found of it. Rumors say that this is actually going to be pretty good - we’ll see.
Correct me if I’m wrong…but as I remember, Altered Beast wasn’t set in a horrible Resident Evil rip off backdrop. More or less it was in an ancient world with Roman nuances and a naked man turning into a wolf.
